County Inmate Walks Off Work Crew
A Columbia County Detention Facility inmate escaped while assigned to a work crew doing lawn maintenance at a county facility in the Fort White area. Steven Swain Shuman, 22 walked off the work site around 11:10am. He was one of three inmates working in that area. Once the supervising Detention Deputy discovered the escape, Patrol Deputies along with additional Detention Deputies responded to the area and set up a perimeter.

Elks Lodge Gives Check for Summer Camps
Sheriff Mark Hunter was given a $600 check from Elks Lodge #893 to help with expenses of two summer youth camps hosted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.
The camps provide two weeks of fun and education for over 120 local students. Each week long camp, one in Lake City and one in Fort White, focus’ on helping the students learn about and interact with Deputies and other first responders.
