On Thursday, March 31 in a ceremony attended by family, friends and Sheriff’s Office personnel, Sheriff Mark Hunter promoted Captain Joe Lucas to the rank of Major and Detention Deputy Chris Douglas to the rank of Captain.
Major Lucas has been named the new Chief Deputy for the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Major Lucas began his Law Enforcement career in May of 1989 as a Correctional Officer with CCSO. Being dual certified in corrections and law enforcement disciplines, he has worked in various positions throughout the agency. During his career, he has worked as a Patrol Deputy, a Detective in the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), rising through the ranks in CID to eventually command that Division. In 2012, he assumed command of the Detention Division as the Jail Administrator. Major Lucas’ experience and knowledge will be a huge asset in his new assignment as the agency’s second in command.
Captain Douglas will become the Jail Administrator. He came to CCSO in 2015 with 30 years of experience in the corrections field. Captain Douglas began his career with the Florida Department of Corrections in 1983 and has started as a Correctional Officer, ascending the ranks, to be named Warden of Liberty Correctional Institution in 2006, retiring in 2013.
We would like to congratulate Major Lucas and Captain Douglas on their promotions and wish them the best as they continue their careers at CCSO.
