On Thursday evening at the Board of County Commissioners meeting Sheriff Mark Hunter awarded Lt. Katina Dicks and Deputy Brian Lucas the Medal of Distinction.
The medals were awarded for their actions on March 7 when they responded to a 911 call of an unresponsive infant, 2 month old Maleigh Robertson. When the deputies arrived CPR had been started by her mother, Raychel Robertson, and Deputy Lucas took over with Lt. Dicks assisting. The deputies continued these life saving measures until emergency medical services arrived and transported the child to the hospital. Due to their training and response, this potentially tragic event has a happy ending, since the child is fully recovered. It was later determined the child had stopped breathing after inhaling formula while drinking a bottle.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office acknowledges the outstanding teamwork with the combined Communications Center whose 911 operators provided crucial pre-arrival instructions to the parent.
