On Thursday morning, July 7, Steven Shuman was captured in Folkston, Georgia. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office alerted Folkston Police that Shuman was possibly in their city based on the on-going investigation. Folkston Police also received a tip from a citizen that saw the news report on a local TV station.
A Columbia County Detention Facility inmate escaped while assigned to a work crew doing lawn maintenance at a county facility in the Fort White area. Steven Swain Shuman, 22 walked off the work site around 11:10am. He was one of three inmates working in that area. Once the supervising Detention Deputy discovered the escape, Patrol Deputies along with additional Detention Deputies responded to the area and set up a perimeter.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Detectives investigate a shooting that occurred on Forest Terrace in unincorporated Columbia County .Deputies were dispatched to Lake Shore Medical Center where a gunshot victim was being treated for a gunshot wound. The victim was in a vehicle driving by her boyfriend when the shooting occurred.
Sheriff Mark Hunter was given a $600 check from Elks Lodge #893 to help with expenses of two summer youth camps hosted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.
The camps provide two weeks of fun and education for over 120 local students. Each week long camp, one in Lake City and one in Fort White, focus’ on helping the students learn about and interact with Deputies and other first responders.
