Driving is serious business!
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office offers a course to better equip teen drivers with the techniques and tools needed to become safe and defensive drivers. Under the direction of professional driving instructors, students learn how to check their vehicle and perform basic maintenance such as checking the oil and tire pressure. This may seem like common sense to most, but, these skills are lacking in a lot of adult drivers. A simple thing like ensuring the tires are properly inflated and are in good working order can save a life.
The teens are then exposed to various driving situations which they learn to overcome. Threshold braking allows drivers to apply maximum braking without losing steering control, which is extremely important and can actually prevent a collision.
Driving a pedal car with drunk goggles is a hoot to watch, but, it also provides the teen with an outstanding demonstration of the effects of driving while impaired.
The seatbelt convincer is a tool that allows a seat belted driver to simulate a 5 mph crash. If you are not a believer in seatbelts before the exercise, you will be afterward. Seatbelts saves lives period!!!!!
Teens are talked to about a growing safety issue with all drivers, distracted driving. Distraction can come in many forms but the end result is the same. A crash that could have easily been prevented. Interested in learning more about TDC or registering for a class, just click the learn more button.
