On Thursday, October 27, a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Deputy saved a child, using CPR, who had fallen in a pool and was unresponsive.
Sergeant Howard Bulthuis responded to 333 SW Troy Street in unincorporated Columbia County where it was reported that a baby fell into a residential pool and was no longer breathing.
When Sergeant Bulthuis arrived, he was directed into the residence, where he found the baby, a 22 month old female, unresponsive on the floor. The baby was not breathing and he began CPR. Shortly thereafter, the baby started breathing and spitting up water. When EMS arrived they continued treatment and prepared her for transport.
The baby was flown to a Hospital in Gainesville, where she is in stable condition.
The incident is under investigation by Detectives and Department of Children and Families.
“I’m extremely proud of Sergeant Bulthuis; his quick actions prevented a tragic outcome for this family and our community as a whole.” Sheriff Mark Hunter stated, “The lifesaving training the personnel at the Sheriff’s Office undergo routinely, paid off immensely! “
