On Tuesday, September 7, 2010, four men were arrested by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office for burglary and grand theft.
In response to several recycling center burglaries, Detectives and Deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office conducted a coordinated surveillance operation of the local metal recycling centers. In the early morning hours of Sept 7, 2010, Detectives observed the four suspects commit a burglary to the Recycling Center, located at 2992 S.E. Washington St., Lake City, FL.
Three of the suspects were observed removing copper wire from the business and throwing it over a fence at the business. The fourth suspect, driving a white 4 door Saturn, pulled up to the business and the stolen copper wire was loaded into the vehicle. Detectives conducted a traffic stop on the Saturn at CR 245 and U.S. 90. Upon stopping, one of the suspects fled from the vehicle but was quickly captured by Deputy Scott Busby.
Detectives observed that the suspects’ vehicle was loaded with copper wire, both in the interior of the car and the trunk. The estimated value on the stolen wire is in excess of $3,000.00.
All four suspects were transported to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and interviewed by Detectives. The four suspects admitted to committing the burglary and theft. The four were arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident. Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians will continue to investigate the previous burglaries to determine if these four suspects were involved in those crimes. Additional charges are pending.
