A traffic stop for a busted windshield resulted in the recovery of 4 pounds of methamphetamine, the arrest of a wanted fugitive in another state, and an ongoing multi-agency investigation.
On April 24, 2024, a deputy with CCSO was conducting criminal interdiction on I-75. He observed a vehicle with a broken windshield and conducted a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, he noticed the car was riddled with bullet holes. The deputy also observed blood in the vehicle and could smell the odor of marijuana. An interview with the driver, Jackson Rutland, revealed inconsistent statements as to the cause of the vehicle’s condition. Rutland eventually identified a potential shooter which led detectives to a possible incident location in Georgia. Detectives learned the possible shooter was wanted by authorities in Georgia and reached out to partnering agencies to assist in them with information we had discovered. As a result of the shared information, that suspect was located in Georgia and was arrested.
Due to the serious nature of this investigation, Rutland’s vehicle was towed to our impound and a search warrant was obtained for it. During a search of the vehicle, approximately 4 pounds of methamphetamine with an approximately street value of $20,000 was discovered underneath the vehicle’s hood. Rutland was arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident.
“This is an example of how proactive law enforcement solves major crimes,” said Sheriff Mark Hunter. “A relatively minor traffic infraction uncovered much more due to the hard work and determination of our deputies and partnering agencies. Crime does not recognize county or state lines, but our strong partnerships with other agencies helps to ensure we are working together to keep all of our communities safe.”
Further details are being withheld due to the continuing investigation.
