On Wednesday May 4, 2022, Sheriff Hunter awarded the “Lifesaving Medal” to Detention Officer Mark Collins and Corporal James Maulden. This award recognizes their actions on January 30, 2022 while serving at the Columbia County Detention Facility.
Detention Officer Collins observed an inmate who was unresponsive. Corporal Maulden arrived to assist with the situation and it was determined the inmate’s airway was obstructed by an object. Since the inmate was unresponsive, Maulden physically held the inmate in an upright position while Collins performed the “Heimlich Maneuver.” The obstruction was successfully removed and the inmate was able to recover from the incident.
In a statement, Sheriff Mark Hunter said, “As we celebrate National Correctional Officer’s Week, this is an appropriate reminder of the professionalism our employees at the Columbia County Detention Facility exhibit each day. They not only take care of each other, but also look after those who are in our custody and care.”
Please join us in congratulating these employees on a job well done!
