On Thursday, June 18, at 8:09 pm, an inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in a cell. Detention personnel began CPR and alerted EMS, who arrived and pronounced the inmate dead.
The subject, whose name will not be released until next of kin notification, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for traffic offenses, probation violation and drug possession. The subject was alone in a cell at the time of the incident and died of apparent suicide by self-asphyxiation.
Sheriff Mark Hunter has requested FDLE conduct the investigation into the death. FDLE in cooperation with CCSO detectives are actively investigating the incident and attempting to locate the next of kin.
This is an active and on-going investigation.
