During the last 30 days, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has investigated 44 vehicle burglaries throughout the unincorporated areas of the county. The M.O. has been the same in each case; valuables stolen from unlocked vehicles.
Most vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. The thief looks for easy access and doesn’t want to make much noise or draw attention. Here are some simple yet effective techniques to thwart the lurking thief looking for a quick score.
Ӣ Remove visible items from your vehicle РIf you leave items visible in your car, you are a target. Even with a locked vehicle you may lose a window and your valuables!
Ӣ Lock Up- The single best defense is to lock your vehicle.
Ӣ Report suspicious activity РIf you see someone looking in cars or walking around, in and out of yards, late at night report it to law enforcement so it can be checked out.
Remember, you can prevent auto burglaries by removing your valuables from your vehicle and locking them in a safe place. Help us protect your property.
