On Thursday, September 28, 2012, a double shooting left one man dead and one in the hospital.
Shortly after midnight, a concerned citizen notified 911 that there was an injured person lying outside of a residence located at 1338 East Washington St. Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and discovered a male subject deceased outside the home. Another male subject was driven to Lake Shore Hospital with apparent gunshot injuries. He was transported to Shands UF for treatment.
Columbia County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to scene to conduct the investigation. Detectives believe that at approximately 1030 pm (9/27/12), the resident of 1338 NE Washington St was in his home when the two suspects entered. The victim has told detectives that at least one of the men was armed with a handgun. The victim armed himself with his own handgun and fired at the two suspects, striking both.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Crime Scene Unit responded to assist in the crime scene processing and evidence collection. Detectives are still actively working with the victim and potential witnesses to determine why the suspects entered the home armed.
The deceased has been identified as:
Johnnie Collins, 7/12/1990.
An autopsy will be conducted at the Office of the Medical Examiner in Jacksonville, FL to determine the exact cause of death. Results of the autopsy and toxicology reports may not be available for several weeks.
The injured subject has been identified as:
Travis R. Brown, 7/20/1986.
Mr. Brown was last reported to be in surgery at Shands UF and his current condition is not known.
