On Tuesday, July 26, 2011, two Columbia County residents were arrested for aggravated abuse of a disabled person.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were called to assist the Dept of Children and Families for a welfare check on a developmentally disabled adult at 299 N.W. Colin Ct. An anonymous complaint alleged that the disabled adult was kept outside of his home during the day and was not being fed properly.
Deputy Josh McCardle arrived with the DCF caseworker and found the victim sitting in a chair in the yard. It was raining heavily and the victim did not have any shelter from the elements. The victim was emaciated and his skin and clothes dirty and soiled. Lifeguard Ambulance Services was asked to respond to medically evaluate the victim. The victim repeatedly stated to law enforcement and Paramedics that he was hungry. The victim was transported to a local medical facility for evaluation and treatment. The victim was determined to be 5’11 in height with a weight of 119 pounds.
No adults or caretakers were initially present at the home. The mother of the victim and her boyfriend arrived just as Deputies were preparing to leave. Deputy McCardle was able to determine that the victim was locked outside of the residence for 8 to 14 hours at a time. The victim was not allowed to access food in the house even though the refrigerator was stocked with food. The mother of the 33 year old victim did state that he was autistic with the mental capacity of a 4 year old child.
Both the mother and her boyfriend were arrested without incident and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility without bond. The victim is in the care and custody of the Florida Dept of Children and Families.
