On Sunday, November 21, 2010, Deputies arrested a man for burglary. A residence off SE Ebeneezer Rd., was burglarized last week. The suspect had burglarized three storage buildings on the property and stole multiple items; including the cremated remains of the victim’s mother.
On 11/21/10, the homeowner observed a man inside one of the storage buildings. CCSO was immediately notified and Deputy Danny Brown responded. Deputy Brown was able to track where the suspect walked to after fleeing the area. At approximately 1:00 p.m., Deputy Brown made contact with Donald Smith at a residence near the victim’s home. Numerous stolen items were found inside Smith’s residence and were returned to the victim. Smith was transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident and booked on multiple charges.
On Monday, 11/22/10, Detectives with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office were able to recover the stolen cremated remains of the victim’s mother. Detectives believe that Smith had previously stolen the remains during the first burglary last week. Smith returned the remains to the storage building during the burglary on Sunday and stole several other items. The value of the property that was stolen and recovered is in excess of $5,000.00.
