On Wednesday, August 11, 2010, a Lake City man was arrested for stabbing someone that came to his aid.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., the victim and his friends were driving on U.S. Hwy 441 near Drew Rd. in northern Columbia County. The victim and his friends observed a vehicle in a roadside ditch and a man tried to jump in front of their vehicle. After they stopped to assist the man, he tried to jump in front of another approaching vehicle. The victim grabbed the suspect and tried to pull him out of the roadway. The suspect produced a pocket knife and stabbed the victim in the abdomen and leg. The victim’s friends subdued the suspect until law enforcement could arrive.
Columbia County Fire/Rescue was called to the scene to evaluate the victim. Due to the severity of his wounds, he was flown to a trauma center in Gainesville, FL.
The suspect, Kerry DeYoung, was transported to the Lake City Medical Center for a medical evaluation. After being released from the hospital, Mr. DeYoung was transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility. He was booked on charges of Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon and is being held on $25,000.00 bond.
The condition of the victim will be updated when possible. The other witnesses to this incident were not injured.
