A Columbia County man was charged with Attempted Armed Robbery following a one day crime spree. Kyle Donald Waltrip was charged by the Lake City Police Department for allegedly committing armed robberies at TCBY and Home Depot on July 12, 2010. The Tractor Supply Company was also targeted by Mr. Waltrip that same day. The clerk at Tractor Supply did not provide any money to Mr. Waltrip and Waltrip fled the scene.
During the course of the next several days following these robberies, numerous investigative leads were developed, and followed up on by Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Detectives. While reviewing the store security video from Tractor Supply, it became apparent that the same individual perpetrated all three (3) robberies and information was formulated on the type of vehicle used.
Based on store security video, the vehicle was determined to be an early 1990’s model Nissan extended cab pickup truck, blue/silver in color. On Thursday, 07/15/2010, Lt. Joe Lucas observed a vehicle matching that description, and observed suspect Kyle Waltrip in operation of the vehicle.
On Friday, 07/16/2010, LCPD Investigator Paul Kash was able to obtain positive identification from a TCBY based off the suspect information developed by the Sheriff’s Office. The witness was able to identify Kyle Waltrip out of a photo lineup. CCSO Detectives were then able to locate the suspect at his residence, where they made a positive identification of the vehicle, and recovered a black and silver pellet gun, resembling a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.
