On Friday, September 25, 2009, an inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility collapsed in his cell while eating breakfast. CCDF staff immediately began life saving measures. Columbia County Fire/Rescue responded within minutes of being called and pronounced the inmate deceased.
Nicholas Picklo III, 10/09/1947, had arrived at CCDF at approximately 3:00 a.m. after being transported by a prisoner transport contractor from Parker County, Texas. Mr. Picklo was arrested in Texas on warrants from Columbia County. He was booked into CCDF on an active arrest warrant for a Violation of Probation. After going through the booking process, Mr. Picklo was placed into a holding cell with another inmate. While eating breakfast, Mr. Picklo collapsed in his cell at approximately 5:45 a.m. after suffering an apparent medical issue. Detention Facility staff attempted to revive Mr. Picklo utilizing an automatic electronic defibrillator (AED) and CPR. Mr. Picklo could not be revived. CCDF staff acted immediately and professionally in their attempts to revive Mr. Picklo.
Mr. Picklo had not been involved in any physical confrontation with CCDF staff members or any other inmates. The initial investigation has not revealed any signs of foul play. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is assisting the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office in this investigation. Investigators are awaiting results from the Office of the Medical Examiner in Jacksonville, FL for a determination of the cause of death.
