Inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility passes away while in custody last night.

On Thursday, June 12, 2025 at approximately 7:22 PM, detention deputies were doing cell checks and
found an inmate unresponsive inside experiencing a medical distress. Life saving measures were
immediately started and continued until County Fire arrived to relieve the deputies. Fire personnel
continued with CPR until Columbia EMS arrived and transported the inmate to a local hospital.

The inmate was pronounced deceased at 8:18 PM, June 12, 2025 by doctors. Preliminary information
does not suspect any foul play.

Due to this being an in-custody death, the investigation is being led by the Florida Department of
Law Enforcement (FDLE) investigators. Any questions regarding this active investigation will need
to be directed to FDLE.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office sends it condolences to the family during their tragic loss
of a loved one.
