CCSO Members Recognized by Gainesville Police Department
On Friday night, June 6, 2025, multiple members of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and
Columbia County Combined Dispatch were recognized for their participation, support, and successful
capture of a fleeing homicide suspect from January 2024.

During this award presentation ceremony held at the Gainesville Police Department, GPD Police Chief
Nelson Moya honored twelve Deputies and six Communication Officers with the Police Service Award.

The Police Service Award is presented to a department member or citizen who performs an act related
to the law enforcement function that contributes significantly to a special community project,
constitutes humanitarianism or heroism, or improves the quality of life within the department or
community, or contributes to the achievement of departmental mission, goals or objectives
administratively.

The award read as follows:

On the morning of January 11, 2024, officers from the Gainesville Police Department, along with
Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, displayed exceptional bravery
and teamwork in the pursuit and capture of a murder suspect fleeing the scene.

Following a fatal shooting, the suspect fled, leading officers on a thirty-minute high- speed
pursuit spanning fifty miles, with speeds exceeding 120 mph. The officers involved put their lives
on the line, executing swift and strategic action to secure the suspect’s detention.

Upon his apprehension, the suspect provided a full confession, confirming responsibility for the
murder he had just committed. Given that he was from Mississippi, his capture was critical—had he
remained at large, the timeline for justice and potential risk to others
would have been unknown.

Beyond securing an arrest, the officers’ quick response ensured the collection of key
evidence, strengthening the integrity of the investigation. The coordinated efforts of multiple
agencies exemplify the power of teamwork in achieving public safety.

In recognition of their outstanding courage, dedication, and collaborative efforts, the members of
these agencies are awarded the Police Service Award, celebrating their exceptional commitment to
justice and protecting the community.
