A pursuit of a stolen ambulance ended on the front lawn of the sheriff’s office operations center late Saturday evening.
On December 9th, at approximately 11:45pm, a deputy was assisting EMS with a subject who was experiencing an altered mental state and possibly under the influence of drugs in the area of SE Baya Ave. and S.R.100. During that encounter, the individual, identified as Stanley Williams (35), was able to gain access to the interior of the ambulance and drove away from the scene. The deputy pursued the stolen ambulance and relayed the information to other deputies. At some point, the ambulance struck a curb, causing damage to a tire. Williams drove the ambulance into the entrance of the CCSO Operations Center on U.S.90 East. He drove across the front lawn before finally stopping near the front of the main entrance to the building. He was then taken into custody without further incident. Other than minor cosmetic damage to the lawn, there was no damage to sheriff’s office property.
“It’s not every day a pursuit ends at our front door,” said Sheriff Mark Hunter. “This just goes to show that we never know what we will encounter from one moment to the next. I’m glad nobody was hurt and the suspect was not able to pose a greater risk to our community.”
Williams was admitted to an area hospital for further evaluation. Charges are being filed and referred to the State Attorney’s Office for Grand Theft and Fleeing and Eluding.
