The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is releasing additional information regarding the deputy-involved shooting which occurred on September 8, 2023.
Deputies were dispatched to a residence on SE Patio Glen regarding a domestic disturbance around 4:00pm. Deputy Brian Rix, a 28-year veteran assigned to the School Resource Unit, who was on his way home, was the closest unit and was the first to arrive on scene. As Deputy Rix exited his patrol car, he noticed the male suspect, Quentin Hill (32), holding the female victim, Laquisha Harper (32), in the front yard of the residence in a choke type hold. As Deputy Rix was confronting Hill, Hill produced a firearm and shot Harper. Deputy Rix then engaged Hill, firing three (3) shots at him. Preliminary information indicates all of Deputy Rix’s rounds struck the suspect, killing him. Harper succumbed to her injuries on scene.
In accordance with policy, Deputy Rix was placed on administrative leave. FDLE was requested to conduct an independent investigation. While there are still some administrative processes that must be completed, investigation has determined that Rix acted lawfully, in accordance with statute and agency policy. Deputy Rix has since returned to full duty, effective September 15, 2023.
“While we would have hoped for a different outcome, I am proud that Deputy Rix relied on his training and experience to prevent further loss of life,” said Sheriff Mark Hunter. “We continue to pray for everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.”
