On Tuesday, July 14, CCSO detention facility personnel learned of an elaborate escape plan at the Columbia County Detention Facility and took steps to prevent it.
The case is active and ongoing but the preliminary investigation reveals that an inmate(s) began removing mortar around blocks on an exterior wall in order to escape through the opening onto the roof and eventually out of the facility.
Upon learning of the escape plan, detention deputies isolated the inmates that had access to the area involved, locked them down, and began a thorough search for contraband. The search uncovered several homemade tools used in the operation.
No inmates have been charged at this time and the investigation continues.
Sheriff Mark Hunter said “I’m proud of all the detention personnel at the jail, their diligence prevented this escape and kept our community safe!”
