On Monday, June 8, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into a deadly altercation that left one man dead and another in jail.
Shortly after midnight, Deputies were dispatched to 1209 SE Rossi Drive in unincorporated Columbia County due to a report of a shooting. The preliminary investigation revealed that Wayne Thompson III, 34 was at the residence and became involved in an altercation with Jeffery Gilbee, 55.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation are still being investigated however at some point; Gilbee armed himself with a shotgun fearing Thompson would attack him or his wife. During the altercation, Gilbee shot Thompson and he died at the scene.
During the investigation, detectives learned Gilbee was a convicted felon and he was subsequently arrested for possessing a firearm. Gilbee was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility on a $10,000 bond.
This case is active and on-going and the investigation continues.
