On Wednesday, December 10, at 4:50 am, an inmate at the Columbia County Detention Facility was found unresponsive in their cell. Detention personnel began CPR and alerted EMS, who transported the subject to Lake Shore Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The subject, whose name will not be released until next of kin notification, was arrested early Wednesday morning on producing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug equipment. The subject was being housed in a holding cell alone at the time of the incident and the preliminary investigation indicates self-asphyxiation.
Sheriff Mark Hunter has requested FDLE conduct the investigation. FDLE in cooperation with CCSO detectives are actively investigating the incident and attempting to locate the next of kin.
This is an active and on-going investigation.
