Few people could imagine more heartbreaking news than a serious crash of a van loaded with church youth; however that’s exactly what happened on Friday, February 21.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office provided only minimal assistance at this tragic crash by directing traffic and securing the area for FHP. It is what occurred afterward that has motivated this post.
We saw a community open its hearts and doors to people in need; driven to action by compassion and concern. The Sunday edition of the Lake City Reporter did a wonderful job of acknowledging those that helped; therefore I will not repeat all the names and organizations that made an impact, since they did not do what they did for attention.
We at the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office can only say “Thanks” to a phenomenal community. Sheriff Mark Hunter stresses to our deputies to serve with compassion and our citizens have provided an excellent example of that to us and all first responders in the county.
