On Thursday, February 7, 2013, a White Springs man was arrested for forgery.
At approximately 11:00 am, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office deputies were alerted by bank employees that the suspect was attempting to cash a personal check drawn on the account of a deceased person. Deputies found the suspect, on bicycle in the drive thru teller, at the Columbia County Bank branch at 1720 U.S. 90 West.
The checks belonged to a deceased customer. Bank staff was aware of the deceased customer and notified law enforcement when the suspect attempted to cash the $300.00 check. The suspect admitted to deputies that he forged the deceased person’s signature and attempted to cash the check. It is believed that the suspect cashed other checks in the recent past and additional charges are possible.
Deputies arrested Ray Newby without incident and transported him to the Columbia County Detention Facility.
