On Thursday, August 18, 2011, a Columbia County man was arrested for setting fire to four structures.
At approximately 1:50 a.m., Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a structure fire at the intersection of Thomas Rd. and U.S. 90 West. A wooden shed was completely engulfed in flames when CCSO and the Columbia County Fire Dept responded. While on scene, another structure fire was discovered on Evening Loop, across from Thomas Rd. The two-story home was occupied at the time of the fire and the resident was safely evacuated. A third fire was discovered on Sundown Way, in the same residential park as the other fires. The residents of this home, including an infant, were safely evacuated as well.
During the investigation of the fires, Sgt Mike Sweat was able to develop a suspect based on witness statements at the scene. According to witnesses, the suspect was seen attempting to light another home on fire. This home belonged to an elderly resident who was not injured. Sgt Sweat located the suspect and placed him into custody without incident.
The State Fire Marshal is assisting the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Columbia County Fire Dept in this investigation. No injuries were reported as a result of the fires.
