On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, a 16 year old male from Fitzgerald, GA was found unresponsive at a football camp in Columbia County.
The Fitzgerald (Georgia) High School Football team was conducting a football camp at the Florida Bible Camp in Southern Columbia County. After a morning of practice, 16 year old DonTeria J. Searcy was found in his cabin unresponsive at approximately 11:15 am. Lifeguard Ambulance Services transported Mr. Searcy to the Lake City Medical Center. After attempts to resuscitate him by EMS and emergency room physicians, Mr. Searcy was pronounced deceased.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has sent grief counselors to the football camp to assist the team during this time of loss of their teammate. Detectives with CCSO are currently investigating the death of Mr. Searcy. No foul play is suspected and an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
The Fitzgerald High School Football team arrived in Columbia County on Friday for the football camp that they were facilitating. The team intends to return to Georgia tonight or tomorrow morning.
