On Saturday, June 18, 2011, two Columbia County women were arrested by the Columbia Sheriff’s Office for filing a false police report.
Crystal Marie Hemingway called the Sheriff’s Office to report a robbery. Ms. Hemingway told the responding Deputies that an unknown male had pulled up in front of a residence she was visiting at 180 NW Kobie Way. The victim stated that the unknown male subject punched her in the face, grabbed her purse, and fled the scene. Ms. Hemingway provided Deputies with a tag number for the suspect’s truck.
Deputy Joshua Joyner immediately began a thorough investigation into the serious allegations made by Ms. Hemingway. Deputy Joyner was able to locate the suspect, based on the information provided by Hemingway. The suspect was interviewed and he denied any involvement in a robbery. The suspect’s whereabouts during the time of the alleged robbery were verified.
Deputies Josh Joyner and Will Porter again interviewed Ms. Hemingway and confronted her with inconsistencies in her story. Ms. Hemingway admitted to Deputies that she made the robbery story up. Ms. Hemingway stated to Deputies that she had given the “suspect” money to buy drugs the previous night. When he did not return, she created the robbery scenario and called law enforcement to report it.
A witness to the event, Kimberly Marie Long, was also arrested for facilitating the false information provided by Ms. Hemingway. Both Hemingway and Long were arrested without incident and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility.
