A Lake City man wanted for Capital Sexual Battery upon a child was arrested by Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Detectives this afternoon. Detectives have been searching for Steve Wayne Mathis, 28, (585 SE ANDREWS LAKE CITY FL)since March 14, 2011. Evidence was found in Mathis’s home that led Detectives to receive an arrest warrant for sexual battery. Detectives were able to track Mathis to a home located at 1023 NW Moore Rd. this afternoon.
Detectives found Mathis hiding under a bed in the residence. Detectives observed that Mathis was armed with a knife. Mathis refused the commands of the Detectives to come out from under the bed. Detectives deployed a Taser (less than lethal compliance device) on Mathis. The Taser was deployed one time at which point Mathis complied with commands. When Mathis was removed from under the bed, Detectives discovered that he had attempted to harm himself with the knife. Columbia County Fire/Rescue was summoned to the scene to treat Mathis. He was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of self inflicted wounds. After being medically cleared, Mathis was transported to and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility on $500,000 bond. His injuries were not life threatening.
Detectives also arrested a resident of the home Mathis was found hiding in. Detectives arrested Alexia Allen and have charged her with accessory after the fact for concealing Mathis, knowing that he was wanted by law enforcement. Allen was transported to the Columbia County Detention Facility without incident.
